Residents of Idekan Farm Settlement in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, were left in shock after Matthew James killed his 55-year-old wife, Etim Mary, over suspicions of infidelity. The tragic incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Sources from the community and the police revealed that James, now in custody, committed the crime due to suspicions that his wife was involved with another man in the community. An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that police operatives from the Ijebu-Igbo Division quickly apprehended James.
According to the eyewitness, James claimed he and his late wife had a “blood covenant” to remain faithful to each other. “They had a blood covenant not to leave each other. He suspected his wife of having an affair. She had been married before and had grown-up children before James married her. He just returned one morning with a machete and hacked the woman to death. He didn’t flee; he stood beside her body,” the source recounted.
Omolola Odutola, spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the grim details. She stated that the wife was found lying in a pool of blood outside their home and was rushed to the hospital by residents but was pronounced dead by the attending doctor. “She had deep cuts on her forehead, shoulders, and other parts of her body. The husband was found with the blood-soaked machete,” Odutola said.
The body was taken to a general hospital in Ijebu-Igbo and later moved to Alayangbe Private Mortuary in Oke-Agbo for an autopsy. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Abeokuta once the preliminary investigation is complete.
