A devastating petrol tanker explosion in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has claimed the lives of at least 105 people. The tragic incident, which occurred late Tuesday night around 11:30 p.m., has also left 55 individuals with varying degrees of injuries.
Shiisu Adam, the Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Police Command, confirmed the updated death toll in a phone interview on *ONLINE*. He stated that the initial figures had risen, with more injured victims currently receiving medical care at Ringim General Hospital.
According to reports, the tanker was en route from Kano to Nguru town in Yobe State when the driver lost control of the vehicle near Khadija University, resulting in a massive explosion. Unfortunately, many people rushed to the scene to collect petrol from the tanker, which led to the tragic increase in fatalities.
Due to the overwhelming number of casualties, some of the injured have been transferred to Federal Medical Centre Birnin Kudu, as the Ringim General Hospital is at capacity. Plans are underway to conduct a mass burial for the victims, many of whom were burned beyond recognition.
