The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Enugu State, is working closely with state security operatives to investigate the death of a 100-level student, Favour Okenyi, whose body was discovered in a campus drainage.
Okwun Omeaku, the university’s acting Public Relations Officer, released a statement on Monday. According to the statement, Okenyi, a student in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, went missing after attending a chemistry practical session. Her body was later found near the Eni Njoku male hostel, close to the university’s stadium junction, on Friday evening.
Videos and photos of the scene circulated widely on social media, showing her body in a drainage system. Omeaku described the incident as shocking and expressed condolences to Okenyi’s family. He assured that the university is collaborating with security agencies to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
“The university community was shocked on Friday, July 5, by the distressing discovery of a lifeless body found in a drainage near the Akanu Ibiam Stadium, UNN,” Omeaku said. “The university administration is deeply saddened by the loss of our student and extends heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased for the tragic death of such a promising young student.”
The university is committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding Okenyi’s death and ensuring justice is served. Omeaku confirmed that an investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for this tragic event.
