IGP Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, has issued a directive that forbids police officers nationwide from making arbitrary arrests, harassing young people, or inspecting their cell phones.
Officers and their supervisors who disobey the orders would suffer severe repercussions, according to a document signed by the Department of Operations at Force Headquarters.
The letter, titled “Order and Directives: Arbitrary Arrest and Detention,” stressed the urgent need to end youth harassment, phone seizures, and needless detentions at checkpoints.

It also made clear that supervisors and command commissioners will be held accountable for any violations, and that monitoring units will be put in place to make sure that everyone complies.
The announcement comes after Kemi Badenoch, the head of the UK Conservative Party, made public accusations against the Nigerian Police for corruption and claimed that officers had stolen from residents using their weaponry.
Badenoch’s allegations that police officers had taken her brother’s shoe and wristwatch sparked a new debate about wrongdoing in Nigerian law enforcement.
