It’s a sad story of suffering as Kaduna, Katsina, and Kano have experienced severe shortages of bread, one of the staple foods most popular among Nigerians.
According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, the most popular staple is currently just as hard to find as petrol. Although the commodity is scarce, its cost has skyrocketed.
Additionally, it was noted that although the material was extremely rare, its prices had skyrocketed. In contrast, there has been a 20–40% increase in the price of commodities.

Many of the people had to resort to less expensive options like bread and beans, noodles, millet porridge, bean cake, and so on because they could no longer afford their beloved meal.
Numerous store owners and customers have expressed their displeasure with the unpleasant trend and called for immediate action to stop it.
One of the bakers in Kaduna said, “It is not that we are on strike, but we have had to stop production since 1st July 2024. This unfortunate development was necessitated by the scarcity of wheat flour and its high cost, as well as sugar, oil and other additives.
“For instance, in June, we were buying a 50kg bag of flour for between N53,000 to N55,000, which has regrettably skyrocketed to between N67,000 to N70,000.”
Bridging The Deficit In Rice Production
Bread and tea vendor Haidar Basiru said he often purchases 100 loaves of bread, but because of the continuous shortage, he was only able to obtain 30 loaves, which were already completely consumed.The bakers claim that the increase in flour and sugar is the reason behind their strike. Given that we typically run our enterprises in the morning and evening, this change has had a significant impact on them.
Provisions vendor Kafayat Sadiq claimed that since Tuesday, she has been unable to supply bread in her store due to a complaint from her supplier on the high price of flour.
Abdullahi Muhammad, a consumer, said, “I went to the shop in the morning to buy bread, which would be eaten as breakfast in my house, but unfortunately, I couldn’t get it.
