The palace of Kano’s 15th Emir, Aminu Ado-Bayero, is to be demolished, according to a startling order from the Kano State Government. This order is supposed to be a component of a bigger restoration project for the historic site. The judgement was made public by the state’s Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General, Haruna Dederi, who emphasised the pressing need for restoration.
Addressing a press conference, Dederi stated, “The government has concluded arrangements for the general reconstruction and renovation of the property, including the demolishing and reconstruction of the dilapidated wall fence with immediate effect.” This announcement indicates a significant shift in the management of the palace’s upkeep and suggests extensive changes are forthcoming.
UPDATE: Court Rejects Reinstatement Of Sanusi As Emir Of Kano
The government has ordered that Bayero be removed from his current dwelling at the Nasarawa GRA small palace in addition to the demolition order. The Police Commissioner has been directed to make sure Bayero leaves the area as soon as possible.
This event follows a decision made by the Federal High Court. Regarding the Kano Emirate Council Repeal Law 2024, the court has rendered a decision on the substantive lawsuit. Although the court upheld the statute, it also declared that Governor Abba Yusuf’s acts after it was passed were invalid. The state administration is still moving forward with its plans for the palace in spite of this.
The ruling by the Federal High Court has added a layer of complexity to the situation. However, the government appears resolute in its decision to overhaul the palace’s structure. Dederi’s comments at the press conference reflect this determination: “We are focused on ensuring the palace is renovated and reconstructed to reflect its historical significance and to provide a safer environment.”
