Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has declared that the legislative branch is thinking of enacting a law to stop street begging in the state.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Obasa made this claim during the Ibile Muslim Community Zakat and Sadaqah Foundation’s Lagos inauguration.

The foundation works to promote Zakat, Sadaqah, and Waqf in order to empower impoverished Muslims and reduce poverty. According to Obasa, the proposed law would give the state government and institutions like the Sadaqah Foundation and the Ibile Muslim Community Zakat the authority to control the solicitation of help.
He claimed that the rule will also make sure that people in need of donations don’t have to rely on street begging. He underlined that this legislation was necessary due to the growing number of beggars in Lagos.
“We are looking at how we can manage such situations to stop beggars from parading the streets of Lagos begging for alms.
“Following such legislation, anyone caught begging on the streets or aiding such, particularly among children, would also be sanctioned according to the law,” Obasa said.

Obasa highlighted the advantages of Zakat at the foundation’s founding, saying that by eradicating poverty, it benefits both givers and beneficiaries.
“It is important for anyone blessed by God to reach out to the underprivileged. This should start from the immediate family and extend to every other member of society.
“The essence is to make everyone equal, or at least to move people from poverty and make them feel comfortable,” he added.
The goal of the foundation is to bring all Muslims in Lagos together, as stated by Sheikh Sulayman Nolla, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the organisation.
