The dismissal of Prof. Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh, the new vice chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, and the dissolution of the university’s governing council have both been confirmed by President Bola Tinubu.
Additionally, Tinubu gave his approval for the dismissal of Mrs. Rosemary Ifoema Nwokike, registrar of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
The Council is headed by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe and consists of Rtd. Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin, Augustine Onyedebelu, Hafiz Oladejo, and Engr. Amioleran Osahon.
Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated in a statement that the Governing Council and its personnel were fired in response to allegations that the Council had unlawfully nominated an unfit vice-chancellor without following the proper procedures.
“After the controversial appointment, the Federal Government stepped in to address tensions between the university’s Senate and the Governing Council of the 23-year-old institution,” the statement said.
Tinubu voiced concern over the Council’s selection procedure, which seemed to flout the university’s governing regulations.
The dismissal of Engr. Ohieku Muhammed Salami from his position as Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences in Otukpo, Benue State, was also approved by the President.

Salami’s unlawful conduct, including as suspending the vice-chancellor without following the correct procedures, led to the decision.
The statement said: “Despite the Federal Ministry of Education’s call for the unlawful suspension to be revoked, Engr. Salami refused to comply.
“Instead, he resorted to abusive and threatening behaviour towards the Ministry’s Directors, including the Permanent Secretary.”
Tinubu also cautioned the councils against causing disturbances at their universities because his administration is committed to raising the nation’s educational standards.
