The Super Eagles of Nigeria were heard singing the previous version of the national song, “Arise O’ Compatriot,” rather than the current one, “Nigeria We Hail Thee,” on Monday prior to their 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Benin Republic.
On Monday, the Eagles took on the Squirrels of Benin at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, in their fourth qualification match.
UPDATE: Senate Move to Return Nigeria to Old National Anthem of 1960
The match organisers decided to play Nigeria’s substitute national anthem during the ceremonial performance of the rival nations’ anthems at the start of play.
But the players could be seen happy-clapping along to the anthem.
Recall that National Anthem Bill 2024 was signed into law by Bola Tinubu on May 29.
The former anthem “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” was revived by the bill.
