“The sun is shining in Abia State finally,” declared Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, in reference to Governor Alex Otti’s development initiatives in the state.
He made this declaration while in the state with Frank Onyeka, a midfielder for the Nigerian Super Eagles, who intends to build a top-notch football academy there.
“I rejoice with the good people of Abia State for this change they’ve brought for themselves,” Sen. Baba-Ahmed said. He urged the people to continue viewing him and Labour Party leader Peter Obi as their brothers and partners in progress.

During the visit, Baba-Ahmed highlighted his connection with Frank Onyeka, saying, “I brought your own son, whom I have adopted, to his father, the Governor of Abia State. He goes by the name Frank Onyeka. He plays football for Nigeria, and we became close because he is pursuing education through sports. Football is education. That is my calling, and it aligns with Governor Otti’s vision, who has already allocated 20% of the state’s budget to education, aiming to meet or exceed the 26% recommended by UNESCO and the World Bank.”
Sen. Baba-Ahmed praised Governor Otti for his prompt and special attention to their visit, expressing gratitude for Otti’s commitment to helping Onyeka realize his dream of building a sports academy. He said, “This is a legacy that has brought our careers and ambitions together. Governor Otti made a noble promise to support this dream, and I am thankful for that.”
Governor Otti welcomed Sen. Baba-Ahmed and his adopted son, describing the visit as good news for Abia State. “This is good news because they are coming to invest in Abia State. All I need to do is issue them a Certificate of Occupancy, which I will do in the next 48 hours. Onyeka is funding this project himself, aiming to give back to his state and support young people who aspire to follow in his footsteps. We are very grateful for this initiative,” Otti said.

Frank Onyeka, who also plays for Brentford FC in the English Premier League, explained his decision to invest in his home state. “I have seen the Governor’s vision for improving the state and bringing in more investments. I am happy to come back to my state and give back to the people of Abia. That’s why I am here,” he said.
Governor Otti’s aspirations for the sports industry, particularly his pledge to construct a conventional Games Village in Nsulu, have been strengthened by this visit.
