Top broadcaster and journalist Oseni Rufai has criticised the use of the Oro festival as a pretext to call off the August 1 national demonstration.
Following the announcement of the Oro festival, which is scheduled to occur on the same day as the planned demonstration, Rufai made his remark.
Before, a pro-Lagos social media page revealed that the festival would take place amid the scheduled statewide protests from August 1 to August 15, 2024, which caused the Oro festival to become popular on X (previously Twitter).

The post read, “Attention residents and visitors of Lagos. Please be informed that the Oro festival will be observed in various communities across Lagos from the 1st of August to August 15. This traditional Yoruba cultural event involves significant rituals.”
But in response to this development, Rufai said on his X page on Thursday that the Oro festival was unheard of during the 2012 protest. He questioned the origin of such a celebration.
He wrote, “In 2012, when they protested we didn’t hear about Oro.”
He further added that according to report, the so called Oro festival is false.
“I also hear the Oro story isn’t true. We mustn’t hear stories. I hear the Oro story is not true, but we must hear about Oro ooo,” he added.
