A seven-member renegotiation committee was re-established by the Federal Government to resolve the 2009 agreements with university-based unions in an attempt to prevent the Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, from going on strike.
Prof. Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, assigned the committee a three-month deadline to wrap up negotiations on Monday during the group’s inauguration in Abuja.
Representatives from ASUU and SSANU, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, are reportedly present on the committee, according to NAN.

The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and Non-Academic Staff of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) are two such organisations.
According to Mamman, the goals of President Bola Tinubu’s administration were to uphold campus harmony and enhance the educational system.
He mentioned that unexpected events caused the renegotiations to be postponed, starting in 2017.
He noted that a draft report covering important issues had been generated by the previous committee, which was chaired by Professor Nimi Briggs.
The minister asked the newly assembled committee to put in a lot of effort and come up with workable solutions to the problems the Nigerian University System (NUS) is facing.

Dr. Yayale Ahmed, the chairman of the committee, urged the government to assist academic institutions in becoming globally competitive and to view the pay of instructors as an investment.
Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, President of ASUU, congratulated the government and hoped the new committee would succeed where the previous ones had failed.
He stressed that as long as the government worked to create a solid academic schedule, the unions would be willing to renegotiate.
