On Thursday, an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court sentenced 45-year-old native doctor Michael Oyewole to 12 months in prison for taking his neighbor’s cow illegally.
Oyewole, a resident of Abeokuta, Ogun State’s Araromi Alakaloko Olomore neighbourhood, entered a not guilty plea on the three counts of conspiracy, theft, and intentional slaughter of a cow.
But Magistrate O.O. Odumosu decided that Oyewole’s culpability for the crime had been established by the prosecution beyond a reasonable doubt.

Oyewole was given a 12-month prison sentence by the court, with an additional 6-month sentence for the intentional and illegal death of the cow, and a N10,000 fine for stealing.
The magistrate ruled that Oyewole could only choose to pay the fine if he gave Mr. Hakeem Ominrinde, the complainant, N400,000 in compensation for the cow he killed. The sentences must be read aloud in succession.
ASP Olakunle Shonibare, the prosecution’s attorney, told the court that Oyewole committed the crime on June 3 at approximately 11 p.m. in the Alakoloko Unique Estate Olomore neighbourhood of Abeokuta.
