Dr. Joseph Ugboaja (OON), the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), revealed today the rationale behind the comprehensive relocation of all patients from the old hospital site to the newly constructed facility in Akammili Umudim, Nnewi.
Dr. Ugboaja, during a media chat held at Blaze radio station this morning in Oraifite, Anambra State, detailed the strategic motivations driving the relocation initiative. He emphasized that the decision was rooted in NAUTH’s commitment to enhancing patient care, operational efficiency, and overall healthcare delivery standards.
He as well introduced a series of cutting-edge facilities aimed at transforming NAUTH into a premier center of medical excellence in Nigeria and beyond. The CMD emphasized that the strategic expansion and enhancement of infrastructure on the hundred hectares of landwere pivotal to realizing his comprehensive plan to elevate NAUTH’s standards and services to be the centre of excellence in the medical field in Nigeria.

Answering a question from the chief anchor of the show on Blaze about which departments have been moved to the permanent site, the medical heavyweight revealed that all medical wards and clinics have been moved, including emergency and Accident unit.
His words;”Our vision is to play at the topmost level and that can’t happen at the old temporary site that is why we moved to the permanent site. Moving patients and wards is our third phase of planning and we activated that after we were done withe first and second phase, which includes building infrastructures and moving the clinic/consultancy respectively.
“We moved all wards and emergency/accident unit to the permanent site and the wards include, the Children ward, the Labour ward, the Emergency and Accident ward, the Antenatal ward, the Special Care Clinic, the Medical Ward Male, the Medical Ward Female, the Gynecologist department, the GOPD.
“Right now, Patients can not be admitted at the old site. the old site was very congested for the vision and plan of what we want to build. The only department left at the old site is the Non-clinical Staff but they will be joining us later this year when we are done with their building (the admin block and the accounting block).

“Our fourth phase is to get human resource to effectively use this insfrastructure and equipments provided. We will as well train and equip all cadre of staff with the latest innovation and use of different equipment provided.”
In outlining his vision for NAUTH (the Centre of Excellence), Dr. Ugboaja expressed a commitment to fostering collaboration with international healthcare institutions, implementing evidence-based medical practices, and nurturing a culture of continuous learning and innovation among staff. He stressed that the newly built infrastructure was just the beginning of NAUTH’s transformation journey towards becoming a global healthcare leader.

“We have a fully equipped and functioning ICT centre built by Igwe K.O.N Orizu for the hospital, we have gone digital to help ease pressure and stress on patients and to promote efficiency in service delivery at the hospital.

“Our whole wards are fully air conditioned, we are building a mega medical city in Nnewi. We have green areas in the hospital environment, the road networks within the hospital, the trees, the lightings, the hospital buildings are intentionally done.
“What we have and we are building is a two thousand (2000) bed capacity hospital, from the surgical wards to the medical wards for both male and female, emergency and accident ward and others with each having over 300 beds except for Emergency which has 100 beds compared to our old site with 18 bed. The GOPD here has over 30 clinics, it is massive with a state of the art structure”.
Dr. Ugboaja, however, revealed the challenges of the ‘Centre of Excellence’ which includes human resource which he said a waiver from the federal government will be discussed with the Health Minister during his visit, to enable the hospital recruit adequate human resource needed to accomodate patients and their vision
