To speed up Nigeria’s growth, former education minister Oby Ezekwesili has argued in favour of transferring authority from the federal to local governments.
Ms. Ezekwesili made her comments on Thursday in Abuja during a virtual democracy discussion on LGA administration hosted by the Fix Politics Initiative in conjunction with events for the 2024 Democracy Day.
She underlined the critical need to amend the 1999 Nigerian Constitution in order to accomplish these reforms as the founder of the Fix Politics Initiative, a citizen-led campaign operating in Nigeria and other African countries.

The ex-minister said, “We believe that foundationally, we have to correct these structural defects by making sure that the local government system is at the centre of the kind of constitutional changes that we are looking forward for.
“We are an organisation that has put our voice out there to say that, tinkering with the 1999 Constitution on the margins will not deliver the new Nigeria we all want; we all want a Nigeria that works for all of us.
“A Nigeria that works for all of us has to be designed by the people and where do you often find the real people, it is at the local communities. And so placing them at the centre of the design of a Nigerian project that works is fundamental; the Nigerian project will only work to the extent that the people are at the heart of it.”
In order to achieve good administration, former information minister Frank Nweke Jr. emphasised the significance of citizens accepting their common obligations.

In his capacity as the head of the Fix Politics Initiative, Mr. Nweke exhorted voters to actively support their fellow citizens in politics and work together to hold the government responsible in addition to voting.
He stressed that in order for Nigerians to successfully monitor the functioning of all tiers of government, they must have a clear awareness of their respective roles and responsibilities.
In order to improve the impact of democracy on the populace, Oluwasesan Dayini, speaking on behalf of the Ebobobaiku Local Government Development Authority in Lagos, emphasised the necessity of giving local government areas (LGAs) particular attention.
