Grammy-winning Nigerian music star Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has unveiled his upcoming album, ‘Morayo,’ describing it as a deeply personal project. This announcement comes as Wizkid prepares for his debut at the Louis Vuitton runway show during Paris Fashion Week.
In an interview with Esquire UK, Wizkid shared insights about ‘Morayo’ and his bond with Pharrell Williams, Louis Vuitton’s men’s creative director. He revealed that the album, which means ‘I see joy,’ is dedicated to his late mother. “I’ve named it after my mum,” Wizkid said, emphasizing the significance of his roots. “It’s very important for people to know where the source of my magic comes from. I’m African, I’m Nigerian; that’s my blood, that’s my DNA. So, it’s important for me to push [Yoruba] out there – let people know about my culture. I like to know about everyone else’s culture, their way of life, and this is mine.”
Wizkid also discussed his style influences, crediting “TV and magazines,” as well as growing up with twelve sisters. His relationship with Pharrell Williams was highlighted for their shared optimistic outlooks and family-centric values. “I’m trying to raise champions,” Wizkid remarked about his children. “I instil that into their minds […] that God has put them here on purpose.”
