At the World Table Tennis (WTT) finals in Doha on Wednesday, Aruna Quadri, the top-ranked tennis player in Africa and Nigeria, pulled off an incredible triumph over Hugo Calderano, the world’s fifth-ranked player.
Quadri fell behind early on, dropping the opening two sets 7-11 and 2-11. He did, however, mount a strong comeback, taking the following three sets 11-9, 12-10, and 12-10.
With this triumph, Quadri finally overcomes Calderano, an opponent he had struggled to beat in the past.

Up until the third set, it appeared as though the Brazilian player would defeat Quadri once more. After that, Quadri held his lead for the following two sets, which guaranteed his place in the competition’s quarterfinals.
After the game, Quadri expressed his elation, saying, “I cannot describe how it feels, but I’m very happy and excited.”
He attributed his success to his coach’s encouragement, stating, “My coach was telling me, ‘don’t give up and keep fighting’; one set could actually make a difference, and it did make a big difference. I listen to him very much. I believe so much in him, and I was just doing what he told me to do.”
The 35-year-old Nigerian athlete will now have an even more difficult task ahead of him. He will play China’s Fan Zhendong, the top player in the world, on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
