THE NPFL MAKES A SURPRISING COMEBACK AS SCHEDULED

 

 

After seven months of inaction in Nigerian elite league, 2018/2019 Nigeria Professional Football League season started with matches across six venues.

In the six matches played in six venues in match-day One, three home wins, two (2) draws and one (1) away win were recorded, with Nelson Ogbonaya of Enyimba scoring the opening goal of the season.

At the Aba International stadium, former champion, Enyimba defeated MFM FC 2-0. Nelson Ogbonaya opened the scoring in the 13th minutes before Abdulrahman Bashir bullet header in the 54th minutes sealed the win for the People’s Elephant. The win saw Enyimba set the two-point gap at the top of the table in Group A. MFM FC are at the bottom of the group’s table.

Sunday Chinedu decided the game in the 16th minutes at the Sani Abacha stadium as Kano Pillars pipped Heartland at Sanni Abacha stadium.

It was a double celebration for coach Bala Nikyu who was unveiled as Nasarawa United Technical Adviser earlier before the Solid Miners confirmed their superiority over Abia Warrior with the only goal of the game that came from Abdulahi Abubakar fine finish.

Surprise of the day came from Goodwill Akpabio stadium in Uyo as El Kanemi Warrior recorded the only away win of the week.

Ba’akaka Ajikolo profits from Ojo’s gaffe to break Akwa United’s fans heart. The away placed El-Kanemi at the top of the table as Kano Pillars and Nasarawa United occupied the second and the third positions respectively.

In Ilorin, Kwara United survived what would have been another home loss in their clash against Sunshine Stars.

Franklin Sasere gave the Akure Gunners the lead in the 45th minutes to end the first stanza in favor of the away side.

Sunshine goalkeeper Ariyo became the first goalkeeper to save a penalty this season as he stopped the penalty kick from Segun Alebiosu.

Seun Olunlayo own goal in the 65th minutes leveled the game for the Afonja Warriors.

FC Ifeanyi Ubah held former Champion Plateau United to a goalless draw at Jo’s stadium.

The total number of seven goals were scored in 6 matches as six games were postponed.
