The Special Adviser to the Governor of Anambra State on Budget Implementation and Monitoring, Hon. Sir. Melie Onyejepu (Ogbuefi), has assured Nnewi residents of plans of Anambra State government to speed up palliative work in Nnewi 100 Foot Road gully erosion.
Hon. Melie gave the assurance on Tuesday, 4th June, 2019, while speaking to Anaedoonline.com during his visit to the erosion site.
Assuring residents, the governor’s aide emphasized on some efforts the government is making to save the residents of the town from further damage of the gully erosion.
It will be recalled also, that Anaedoonline.com wrote a series of reports on the menace the erosion has caused, crippling a lot of businesses in and around 100-Foot road.
He said, “In 2015, he undertook a study of all the erosion sites in Nnewi, we did a compendium of all the sites, with the support of Governor Willie Obiano, we sent it to the Presidency for Intervention, however, due to the paucity of funds, they could not intervene.
But with the support of the state government and Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), the World bank started Intervention at Obiofia Nnewichi erosion site at the project cost of 6.7 billion Naira, with state government contributing about 2 billion Naira.
Speaking further, about the government Intervention on 100 foot road, he said, “The state government has already contracted IDC Construction company to intervene on the erosion site pending when the world bank will finish with the necessary process, I am pretty sure that before the end of this year, the world bank in collaboration with the state government will commence work on the erosion site which may gulp up to Seven (7) billion Naira.
He was asked about the palliative work currently going on in Nnewi 100 Foot Road, he said, ” The palliative work is going to take some weeks, what is making the erosion active is because there is a gutter channeling water into the gully, the construction company is trying to divert the water through another channel, so that the expansion of the gully will stop.
