Cancer is one of the deadliest pathologies that has been and is still plaguing the human populace and has been a constant thorn in the flesh of medical practices.

However, medical scientists, researchers, and practitioners have left no stone unturned in their quest to cause an end to the horrifying quagmire the disease entity has left the messes to wallow in.

Consequently, despite the maximum effort, most cancer still does not have a definite treatment. There is also the problem of medications to combat the disease entity which in itself is a detriment to the human body if not adequately administered and properly monitored.

Thus, it is noteworthy that the human populace endeavors to prevent and protect against cancer via the following measures:

But for the purpose of this article, we would  focus on the lifestyle modifications vis-a-vis the following;

  1. Refined Foods

Most of the preservatives used in the production of processed foods have mild carcinogenic effects which over a period of time sum up to have a significant effect on the body cells. Examples are crispy foods that are heated to high temperatures and they give off chemicals called acrylamide, a potent carcinogen. Other typical examples are processed meat.

It is, however, advisable for individuals to cut down on the number of processed foods by baking, roasting, or totally avoiding it.

2. Tobacco

It is actually of no consequence whether you are an active or passive smoker. It has been extensively researched that about 10 chemicals in tobacco are carcinogenic and are responsible for lung cancers, oesophagus cancers, pancreatic cancers to mention but a few.

Hence, it is imperative you stop smoking or staying around people who smoke.

The greater the volume you consume, the higher the risk of getting cancers like Primary Liver Cell Carcinoma (PLCC), oesophageal, colorectal and pancreatic cancer. Hence, if one must drink, it should be occasionally and moderately.

This chemical is used in body embalmment and also used in many household products. If any furniture or household product contains this chemical, the room should be properly ventilated to reduce humidity as much as possible. Air conditioner works perfectly in such a scenario.

UV rays get absorbed by the skin and cause damage to the cells over a long period of exposure. Most skin cancers (Basal Cell Carcinoma, Melanocytic Melanoma) are caused by UV rays.

Air pollution and climate change have sorely depleted the ozone layer which protects and filters the harmful properties of the sun’s rays. Thus, to stay safe, the skin should be protected. Use sunscreens, wear a hat and sunglasses.

Automobiles and articulated vehicles run on diesel and fuel. The gas and soot (an amorphous form of carbon) produced by these engines are potent carcinogens that cause lung cancer, oesophageal cancer etc. As much as one can, it is imperative to avoid idling in traffic or spending time next to diesel and engines (generator inclusive).

In a nutshell, the fore mentioned points are the common carcinogens that if avoided will greatly reduce the incidence of cancer in the human populace. It is also vital to give time and support to our industries and unrelenting health researchers and scientists to find a lasting solution to the menace called cancer.
