Enugu State Government has said it will declare its position on the conduct of local government election following the expiration of the tenure of local government chairmen in the state.

The Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mr. Peter Okonkwo disclosed this in an interview in Enugu on Tuesday.

Okonkwo, who was fielding questions on the delay in activities that should culminate in a fresh council election before Dec. 4, said the government will clarify its position soon.

Recall that the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) had on Nov. 4, 2017, conducted an election that ushered in the current local government chairmen.
This was, however, after the third tier of government was administered by caretaker chairmen by the current administration for over one year.

But less than 40 days to the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent chairmen, there is no signal as to the preparedness of the state government to conduct a new election.

Okonkwo maintained that the state government had already taken a position which would be made known to members of the public by early November.

According to him, “The government already has a position and the governor will address that issue and make it public as we are entering the new month.

“The clarification will come after the State Executive Council Meeting,” Okonkwo said.
