A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Global Society for Anti-Corruption (GSAC) has said that residents of the state would not accept anything short of an election of new council chairmen.

The South East/ South-South Regional Director of the group, Mrs. Amaka Nweke said that it was the time the local government areas were detached from the control of state governors.

Nweke appealed to the state government not to fall to the undemocratic practice of running the local councils with caretaker chairmen as it had ample time to conduct elections.

“It is important to state that this is the closest arm of government to the people and it is pertinent to clearly separate its management from the stranglehold of state governors.

“The local government is a creation of the law and those in position of authority are expected to encourage its success and not to manipulate the process by the recruitment of the administrators,” she said.

The regional director said that it was sad to note that the performance of the current chairmen appeared to be the worst in the state since 1999.

”This is true when you compare the size of revenue they receive with the job done or seen to be done with the money,” she said.

Nweke said that the NGO had compiled monies received as allocations by the council chairmen in the last two years were running into billions of naira.

“The question people were asking now was how the funds were managed,’’ she said.
