Anambra Lawmakers Demands Investigation into the Death of Nnewi Catholic Priest

Anambra State House of Assembly, on Wednesday, called on the securities agencies in the state to investigate the death of Nnewi Catholic Priest, Very Rev. Dr. Edmund Nwagbala.

It will be recalled that on the early hours of Saturday, 16th November, tragedy struck at St. Peter’s Clever Catholic Church Odida Nnewichi, Nnewi, after a suspected fire explosion killed the Parish Priest of the Church, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Edmund Nwagbala in his residence.

The fire explosion was said to have started at 2:00 am on Saturday morning, after the Priest returned to his residence around 1:00 am.

Resuming from her three weeks break, the lawmakers urged the various security agencies in the state to launch a proper investigation into the death of the Catholic Priest to ascertain what happened.

The call was made after the lawmaker representing Nnewi North Constituency, Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor, while moving for adjournment of plenary, used the opportunity to speak on the need to investigate the death of Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Edmund Nwagbala.

Speaking, Hon. Nonso Okafor thanked his colleagues and the Governor for showing concern over the death of the Catholic Priest.

According to him, the majority of his constituents believe that the death of the Priest was not a natural death, hence, the need for a serious investigation to unravel what happened.

He described the late clergyman as one of the most vibrant priests he has ever come across. According to him, the late priest was committed to the growth and development of the church, especially in taking care of the welfare of the members.

Emphasizing on the need for an investigation, Nonso Okafor pleaded with the securities agencies to ascertain whether it was a natural death or homicide, since his death, has raised many suspicions.

On behalf of the Lawmakers, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Uche Okafor while sympathizing with Nnewi Community, commended the Governor, Chief Willie Obiano for his prompt action in visiting the scene of the incident with the head of security agencies in the state, urging him not to relent in its efforts to unravel the circumstances behind the unfortunate demise of the Priest.

The lawmakers, however, observed a minute silence in honour of the late priest.
