Yelitude: Igbo Leader, Stakeholders Advises Police. kick Against Road Blocks,Check Points

As the festive seasons draw closer each passing day, the spiritual leader of the Igbo nation Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka (Ogilisi Igbo) has lent his voice on the condemnation trailing Police road blocks/check points in various highways and interstate roads across Nigeria.

Ogilisi Igbo emphasized on roads in the southeast especially from Onitsha to Lagos advising the Police authority in the country to adapt patrol system formula which is inline with global best practice in crime fighting and avoid using a formula that antagonize the Police with members of the public.

Relevant Stakeholders such as Ohanaeze Ndigbo, members of the National Assembly led by Senator Chuka Utazi, Civil Society groups and transporters and travellers are kicking against close circuit road blocks/check points mounted by the Police on the highways and all the interstate roads.

According to Senator Utazi in a document he presented at plenary, there were tens of such road blocks) check points from Onitsha to Lagos which is causing traffic delay on the highways to the inconvenience of transporters and travellers because the roads are bad too.

Chief Ezeonwuka who is also the SA to Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State on Vigilante Service while lending his voice as a backdrop of the outcry called for the attention of the Inspector General of Police Adamu Mohammed and State Police Commissioners to as a matter of urgency look into the matter with a view to save the public from inconvenience service prone to antagonizing members of the public against the Police.

He advised the Police boss to lias with State Commissioners to abolish the road blocks/check points formula and adapt patrol system formula which according to him is the best practice in crime fighting all over the world.

He said “as the Spiritual leader of the Igbo nation, I am sure the Police authorities at the Federal and State levels are not aware of what is going on the roads regarding mounting of road blocks/check points, so let me draw the attention of the Inspector General of Police and State Commissioners to the outcry against road blocks/check points being mounted here and there by junior Police officers assigned for crime fighting.

“Let them use patrol formula to monitor and arrest criminals instead of road blocks/check points because blocking the road is causing traffic jams which is inconvenience to transporters and travellers,”

He continued “In Anambra State, Governor Obiano provided a lot of security vehicles for the Police, so permit me to humbly advise the Commissioner of Police in Anambra to advise his men to use those vehicles made available by Obiano to patrol, monitor and arrest criminals instead of mounting road blocks/check points capable of pitching members of the public against the Police owing to the attendant ill of inconvenience situation.

The Police in Anambra and Nationwide is doing a good job and we must have to appreciate them and also advise them where and when necessary based on our observations.
