Anambra Govt Partners WHO To Fight Tuberculosis In Idemili North LGA

The Anambra State Ministry of Health plans to partner World Health Organisation (WHO), to stem tuberculosis in four wards in Idemili North Local Government Area.

In a speech at a medical outreach, Mrs Ebele Chukwuka, a medical practitioner said that tuberculosis was on a high increase in Nigeria which prompted Anambra Ministry of health, WHO and International Non-governmental Health Agencies to create awareness to stem the spread of the disease.

Dr Chukwuka explained that when people cough over two weeks, they should investigate it to administer proper medication and eradicate spread of the disease as it is contagious.

Mrs Njideka Okpala, Tuberculosis and Leprosy Supervisor, Idemili North LGA, said that the exercise was geared towards eradication of tuberculosis, leprosy and Buruli ulcer, and coughers for over two weeks, especially this harmattan season.

Mrs Okpala said the patient’s sputum will be taken to gene experts and if the result is positive , will be referred to the nearest health facilities and centres for free drug administration.

She listed the signs and symptoms of tuberculosis to include, persistent coughing, night sweats, fever, weight loss and fatigue.

She disclosed that chest x-ray would be conducted for children of age zero to fifteen free at Iyienu and Immaculate Heart Hospitals for diagnosis.

Free tuberculosis tests and treatment were conducted at Holy Cross Parish, Saint Paul’s Church, Old Mercedes parts and New parts Markets, Nkpor.
