FG Ends DSTV Exclusivity Rights On premier League Games

The Federal Government Of Nigeria has prohibited exclusivity rights in Broadcasting sporting events in the country.

The Federal government in a statement directed the National Broadcasting Commission NBC to as a matter of urgency implement measures aimed at sanitising and repositioning the broadcast industry.

Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed stated this in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday and made available to newsmen by the Special assistant to the President on Media,Office of the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Segun Adeyemi.

Mr Lai Mohammed said the break in Monopoly will boost reach and maximize utilization by all broadcasters of premium contents.

He said “This regulation prevents the misuse of Monopoly or market power or anti competitive and unfair practices by a foreign or a local broadcaster in the television and radio markets.”

Once implemented, major sporting events will be accessible to other Pay Television stations as well as free to air platforms in the country.

South African company Multi Choice presently have the Monopoly of beaming major sporting events in Nigeria, the Nigerian TV stations will now also have access to few of the events once the new development comes into play
