The sack of Hon. Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as Governor of Imo State by the Supreme Court still generates controversy to date.
Many are still protesting against the judgment which did not favour Ihedioha and the PDP but was in favour of Hope Uzodinma and the All Progressives Congress, APC, which came a distant fourth position based on the result announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Different people have tried to state the reason Ihedioha was sacked. Some said it was because of the New Year prophecy by Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka of the Adoration Ministry Enugu, Nigeria, where the Catholic Priest had predicted that Uzodinma would become Governor of Imo State about two weeks earlier before the Supreme Court judgment.

Eventually, that prediction came to pass. Others made several other allegations that it was due to high powered plots by the ruling APC and other powerful bodies to take over Imo from the PDP that was implemented. They even alleged that the Judiciary was used to achieve that plot.
In all these allegations, it appears that people will still be confused as to which one to believe. However, the reason that seems very rational which some people could believe were the reasons given by Amaze Njoku that two major reasons among others were given for Ihedioha’s loss at the Supreme Court. These two reasons are not 100 percent sure but they are sound and rational to believe.
One of the major reasons was a grave mistake made by INEC. INEC’s failure to disprove the 388 polling unit results rendered by Governor Hope Uzodinma as early as possible even before the case came up in court affected Ihedioha’s chances of victory. INEC should have known that that would be used against the person it declared winner of the election. Surprisingly, it was reported that INEC tendered nothing to contradict the results tendered by Uzodimma.
The second major reason is the inability of Ihedioha’s legal team to make a bold proof of a major claim. Yes. What wins you a case in court is your ability to prove a claim you make and backing it up with credible and admissible evidence. In court, logic without evidence is simply blind and lame. Imagine when a serious case like that of election to the office of a state Governor was involved. It was still reported that Ihedioha’s lawyers simply alleged that the results were forged but they never tendered any evidence to prove their bare assertions. How do you convince the panel who were not there on the day of the election to believe this claim?
So far, these two reasons are very rational and convincing that one would believe that some factors played against Ihedioha and the PDP in favour of Uzodinma and the APC. Nevertheless, Ihedioha and the PDP may decide to apply for a review of the judgment by the Supreme Court.
Many people are waiting to see if they will be able to convince the Apex Court to change its earlier decision on the matter. It would be very hard to change the judgment but nothing is impossible. If it scales through in favour of PDP and Ihedioha, then they would have set a new precedent in the Nigerian judicial system which will no doubt deepen democracy and election case administration.
