United States Surgeon General, Jerome Adams, has said that the face mask is not effective in preventing people from contracting the coronavirus and may increase risk of infection if not worn properly.
Adams, who gave the warning on Monday, urged people to stop wearing face masks so that they would not increase their chances of contracting the virus.
“You can increase your risk of getting it by wearing a mask if you are not a health care provider,” Adams told Fox & Friends.
Adam had on 29 February said in a tweet @Surgeon General, that “Seriously people- stop buying masks!”.

They are not effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!”
“Folks who don’t know how to wear them properly tend to touch their faces a lot and actually can increase the spread of coronavirus,” he added.
Similarly, the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that people who are not infected should not wear a face mask, but insists that health workers should wear the mask.
According to CDC, “CDC does not recommend that people who are well, should wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
“Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others.
“The use of face masks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).”
