How I Suffered Depression After I Moved From Nigeria To The US – Lady Recounts

A Nigerian lady who moved to the US shortly after completing her NYSC in 2019, has recounted her battle with loneliness, depression, racism after she moved to Los Angeles.

The lady who goes by the name Uju, said indeed the standard of living abroad is great but it is not the best of life for anyone. According to her, unlike Nigeria, everyone is just about how they would pay their bills in the U.S.

There’s no word to explain depression that would make the word unique in its angst. It is following many Nigerians like a black shadow, making most people wish they were someone else. It is like heavy ice melting on people, and it seems there is no lighthouse in sight for rescue. Depression and suicide are twin causes of death that are increasing in prevalence for all age groups in Nigeria but why isn’t anyone talking about it?.

According to research conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in July 2018, Nigeria ranked 5th on the World annual suicide list. In 2017, a middle-aged medical Doctor instructed his driver to park beside the Lagos famous third mainland bridge, and while people thought he was there for sightseeing, he jumped inside the Lagoon to find peace uncannily, no words, no suicide note, which left his driver in shock.

In March 2018, a 500 level student at the University of Benin committed suicide in his apartment. On Saturday 17, 2018 one Madam Veronica Uzoaku who was said to be a grandmother abandoned her cooking halfway, went inside her room and took her life. And just recently, Desmond a final year student of Godfrey Okoye University committed suicide after failing a course.
