S’East Governors Not Doing Enough To Protect Farmers – AFAN

All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has called on governors of the South East to drastic steps towards safeguarding farmers from unprovoked attacks by herdsmen in the zone.

The National vice president of AFAN, Chief Tobias Iwu, who said this during the group’s zonal meeting in Enugu yesterday regretted that the governors where not doing enough to ensure farmer’s security which is their primary responsibility.

“The clash between farmers and herders has affected farmer’s output in the South East but it is the duty of government to provide security. In as much as everyone should contribute to it, it is the primary duty of government. That’s a mark of good governance.

“We have interfaced with many groups including Miyetti Allah in order to achieve security. We have been working to entrench peace but the governors should use all the power within their disposal to protect farmers in the zone. The Governors should also help to unlock the agricultural potentials of the zone by working with AFAN in this regard.

In a communique, the group demanded that the South East should be allowed to produce the next President of AFAN as it was yet to do so since its inception.

“We resolved that the leadership of the body be ceded to the South East because we have not served as elected president since the inception of AFAN. We believe that this time, it is our turn to produce the next President of AFAN. This will stabilize the association and move to greater heights in this country.

“We resolved in this meeting that the National leadership of AFAN as elected should be supported to conclude the process they started and hand over to the new elected executive as quickly as possible”.

Other members present at the meeting include, the Assistant National secretary Mrs, Akunna Ubosi, the Vice Chairman, South East, Daniel Okafor, and all AFAN state chairmen in the zone.
