COVID-19: Nnewi Catholic Diocese Suspend Celebration of Masses

The Catholic Diocese of Nnewi have suspended public celebration of masses on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation starting from Monday, 30 March 2020, till Sunday 19th April 2020.

In a press release made available to Anaedoonline.com, the Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev. Hilary Paul Odili Okeke, noted that the priests and their household in their different parishes and institutions shall hold the celebration of mass representing all the people, who should be well notified of the times of the masses for their spiritual participation.

The Bishop while noting the importance of Lenten Assembly and Cathedraticum, submitted that Lenten Assembly and Cathedraticum at Ozubulu and Amichi regions will not be celebrated together in each of the regions.

He noted that the priests will present the summary his Lenten Assembly teaching at the Mass. He directed Priests in each of the two regions to collect the money for Cathedraticum from individuals, institutions and organizations in their parishes and submit it to the Secretariat or pay it directly to Catholic Diocese of Nnewi Cathedraticum Fund.

On evening Mass of Holy Thursday Good Friday celebration, Easter Vigil Mass and other Masses of Easter, the Bishop directed that the mass should take place, but without the full participation of the people on account of the restrictions around the assembly and movement of people.

He noted that the Bishop and the Bishop’s household, the priests and their households for the parishes and institutions, shall hold the celebrations representing all.

He however urged members to pray steadily to God to save the country from Coronavirus, to enable them to return to normal celebrations both in the society and in the Church.

It will be recalled that earlier in the week, the Executive Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, directed the suspension of all public gatherings, including, traditional marriage ceremonies, community festivals, ofala festivals, masquerade festivals, Igbankwunwanyi, funeral ceremonies, baby christening, new yam festivals, title-taking ceremonies and any meeting of more than thirty (30) participants.
