Talks between the Premier League and the UK Government over a return for football are at an advanced stage, the UK Mirror reports.

It is understood that there is a tentative agreement for fixtures to resume in June behind closed doors.

Government health officials are hopeful of a coronavirus peak in the next weeks, after which games will be sanctioned under strict guidelines.

During an emergency meeting on Friday, Premier League officials reached a decision to finish this season.

Officials also discussed measures to keep the players in a sterile environment as much as possible, limiting contact with the wider public.

To ensure supporters don’t try to attend matches, there have also been talks with TV companies to extend the number of games screened during June.

While officials have offered tentative agreement, the Premier League knows there could be further delay, should the situation get worse in the UK over the next six weeks.

Anaedoonline.com reported that Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has called for Premier League (EPL) fixtures to be cancelled.

According to the Spaniard, it is better to suspend games than play behind closed doors, as coronavirus continues to affect sporting events.

So far in the UK, the government has allowed football matches to continue as normal.

But on Tuesday, the Premier League decided to move City’s clash with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday over fears of the spreading coronavirus.

Authorities in Italy have postponed Serie A games, while league matches in Spain will be played without fans for two weeks.

“I would not love to play matches in the Premier League or Champions League or the cups without the people. But we are going to follow the instructions of the government.

“Everybody around the world is involved in that and we just follow what we have to do and follow the instructions,” Guardiola said according to ESPN.
