With the commencement of football activities gradually approaching, Manchester United’s pursuit of Jack Grealish has ‘discouraged’ youngster Angel Gomes from signing a new contract.

Grealish, 24, has enjoyed a superb season in the Premier League for Aston Villa and holds the keys to keeping his boyhood club in the top flight.

He’s scored seven times and grabbed six assists in the league – a record few midfielders outside the top six can match up to.

And, according to several reports, United could be willing to spend up to £70million to sign Grealish in the next transfer window.

However, the Manchester Evening News reports that United’s interest in Grealish, as well as Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham, has pushed Gomes whose first-team opportunities are already limited  closer to the exit.

The report states: “United have assuaged some of Gomes’s reservations about the direction of the club since the start of the season but have targeted three similarly aged British talents in Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and Jude Bellingham ahead of the next transfer window, which is believed to have discouraged Gomes.”

The England youth international, who made his United debut at the tender age of 16, has only made six first-team appearances this season and is reportedly a target for Chelsea amongst others.

David Sadler has adviced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should play Paul Pogba in his favourite midfield position with quality players like Bruno Fernandes around him for Manchester United.

That is the view of former United defender and Football Pools panellist David Sadler who believes Pogba has the ability to conquer world football again, as he did with France at the 2018 World Cup.

As discussions continue about how to resume the Premier League, many United fans are excited about the prospect of Pogba and January signing Fernandes playing together for the first time. The Frenchman has missed most of the 2019/20 season with an ankle injury, after an inconsistent 2018/19 campaign.

And Sadler, who played for United for a decade between 1963 and 1973, thinks there is more to come from Pogba.

“He’s an outstanding player, he told MEN Sport via The Pools. “He’s so tall, he’s pacy. He’s leggy but he somehow keeps the ball under control. And when he’s at his best, you would have him in your side every day of the week. But he just doesn’t seem to be showing it.”

Pogba has been heavily linked with a departure from United, his boyhood club who he rejoined in 2016 after a spell at Juventus. The signing of Fernandes – plus United’s interest in Jack Grealish and James Maddison – put the Frenchman’s future into doubt.

But despite the question marks, Sadler thinks Pogba and Fernandes could work on the same side.
