The people of Ibagwa Nike community in Enugu East local government area of Enugu state yesterday pleaded with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi not to be dismayed by the activities of ‘misguided’ few who were opposed to the provision of infrastructure in the community by the state government.

The community was reacting to a recent ‘peaceful protest’ by some people who claimed to be members of Anekeode and Obangene families in the community, who alleged that the traditional ruler, HRH Igwe Emmanuel Ugwu and some officials of the State Ministry of Housing were ‘expropriating’ their land.

The community disclaimed the protesters, saying they were land grabbers who had over time sold and re-sold lands belonging to the state government and the community.

The community stated that the protesters embarked on the mission to create confusion and disturb the peace of the area having learnt that government was about to begin infrastructural development of the land it duly acquired from the community some years back, but which some people had been criminally trespassing on.

The traditional ruler of the Community, HRH Igwe Emmanuel Ugwu; the representative of Anakeode village in Ibagwa Nike community, High Chief Joseph Mbannamchi; and Chairman of Ibagwa Nike Power of Attorney, Chief (Sir) Emeka Ngwu while addressing a press conference in Enugu, explained that five villages that make up Ibagwa Nike, including; Oshimene, Anekeode, Ogavene, Ezeneke and Aguode inherited 38 parcels of land from their father and progenitor, Enenwudara and that all the lands belonged to the community in common and not to any village.

Igwe Ugwu while denying allegation that he colluded with state officials to confiscate and sell communal land, pleaded with Governor Ugwuanyi and the general public to discountenance the ‘protesters’ “who were bent on fomenting trouble in order to hide their illicit land transactions and scare government away from developing the community.”

He said that since his emergence as the traditional ruler in 2008, he had diligently followed the traditions and laws of the community in administering the people, ensuring the reign of peace and attracting amenities and development to the area.

“When I came in as Igwe, I approached then Governor Sullivan Chime and pleaded with him and he listened to me and returned 125 hectares (about 2000 plots) of land from the land government acquired from the community. Till date non of the community members has come to thank me.

“It is unfortunate where you have a traditional ruler some people will prefer gangsterism instead of approaching Igwe,” he lamented, noting that he had intelligence report that some people were trying stage similar kangaroo ‘peaceful protest’ in his palace which they would circulate the picture in the media to create the impression that there was crisis.
