Former Anambra State Chairman of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Prof. Obi Nwosu, has blamed lack of access road as the major problem stopping the relocation of Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, to the permanent site.
Speaking during an interview session with Anaedonline.com, Prof. Obi Nwosu revealed that the inability of Anambra State government to build motorable roads to access the permanent site of the hospital has continued to hinder the needed relocation of the hospital.
Prof. Obi Nwosu who also consults for Chimex Hospital, Nnewi, also believes that the current management of Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, has not done enough to facilitate the movement of the hospital to its permanent site.
Giving his reasons, he said, “The state government supposed to construct access roads to enable people to access the hospital, since the state government collect taxes from the hospital, it is their duty to service those place they generate the taxes from”
“The hospital cannot move to the permanent if there no roads leading to the hospital, Governor Peter Obi wanted to build an access road to the hospital, but he stopped at Ozubulu, before he left, you don’t expect people to go to Ozubulu before accessing a Hospital in Nnewi, If there was an access road to the permanent site, development could have come to the area”
“The road being constructed by Hon. Chris Azubuogu stopped before the permanent site, because of the poor quality of the road, the road has been eroded, it is beyond what Hon. Azubuogu can do, the young man is really trying, that work is beyond what he can do”
“For the permanent site to be accessible, we need five good roads, one of the roads should come from Umuezena Umudim, the other one should go through Akamili Umudim, then another one from Uruagu close to Nnewi Hotels, then there should be one that comes from Oraifte, then the one from Ozubulu”
“For the hospital management, we need to get a Chief Medical Director(CMD) who is interested in moving the hospital to the permanent site, if we achieve that, moving to the permanent site will be a lot easier, the expectation is that the management should take the lead in moving the hospital to the permanent site.
