People of Abba community , Njikoka Local Government Area held a peaceful demonstration at Anambra state Government House over what they described as alleged land grabbing and destruction of property belonging to the community by individuals from a neighboring town.
The protesters, numbered over five hundred, alleged that even though a case about the land dispute is still in court, the Ukpo community, they claim, is currently erecting a structure on it, as well as destroying property that belong to Abba people.
The protesters sang solemnly, holding up placards and banners with inscriptions that conveyed their grievances.
The Oye Abba land dispute between the two communities has been on for four decades, but took a dangerous turn when property erected and crops cultivated on the land began to get destroyed.
Explaining the situation to the Secretary to Anambra State Government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, who addressed the protesters, Mr. Obinna Chukwuma, a community leader in Abba, said that the occasional destruction of property belonging to the community meant that the safety of lives of its residents was no longer assured and pleaded with Anambra state government to give the issue fair and urgent attention.
Responding, Professor Chukwulobelu, who commended the protesters for marching peacefully and not taking laws into their hands, stated that reports by the panel set up to look into the land dispute and other related cases were currently being studied, assuring that the state government would redouble efforts to sort out the problem.
