Governor Ugwuanyi Pardons 25 Prisoners

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has granted pardon to 25 inmates in Enugu, Nsukka and Oji River correctional centres.

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, disclosed that the pardon was sequel to the recommendation of the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, and in the exercise of the powers conferred on the governor by “Section 212 (I) (a-d) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.”

According to the statement by the SSG, the 19 affected inmates were from Enugu Correctional Centre, five from Nsukka and one from Oji-River.

The names of the inmates are as follows: Egwu Chukwuebuka, Anthony Ejiogu, Chibuzo Ugwu, Ikechukwu Elom, Ejike Anigbo, Ozioma Onuegbu, Chukwu Francis, Ifebuche Nwafor, Nnaji Uchenna, Sunday Michael, Kingsley Onyebuchi, Ikechukwu Ogbu, Chinonso Obinna, Godwin Nwafor, Onuh Emmanuel, Oluchukwu Nwobodo, Ebuka Ozoemena, Nwaokoro Ikechukwu and Bitrus Destiny, for Enugu Correctional Centre.

Others are Ejike Solomon Eke, Odo Sunday, Ede Ekene, Itodo Chiegonu and Ifeanyi Azegbe, for Nsukka Correctional Centre, and Obi Simon, for Oji River Correctional Centre.

In another news, the Enugu State Traditional Rulers’ Council has unanimously passed a vote of confidence on Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi-led administration to mark this year’s Democracy Day.

The traditional rulers expressed their satisfaction in a statement by the Chairman, Igwe Lawrence Agubuzu, which was made available to newsmen in Enugu on Sunday.

Agubuzu said that the entire body took the unanimous decision on June 8 during its extra-ordinary meeting in Enugu.

“The traditional rulers in Enugu State are satisfied with the manner and style of governance of His Excellency, Dr Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the Governor of Enugu State, and thereby pass a unanimous vote of confidence on him.

“The traditional rulers do hereby implore all indigenes of Enugu state and indeed the general public to avoid any form of distraction which will affect governance in the state.

“The traditional rulers call on all concerned to support His Excellency, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in his devoted service toward continued delivery of democratic dividends,’’ the chairman said.

He further said that the royal fathers endorsed the proactive measures and initiatives put in place by Ugwuanyi in handling security and COVID-19 challenges in the state.

“The traditional rulers appeal to the Federal Government, WHO, NCDC and the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 to continue to support the good works being done in the state to stem the tide of COVID-19,’’ he added.
