Anambra State Commissioner of Police, John Abang said the Command has recorded thirteen (13) cases of rape between January 2020 to date.
He said twelve (12) out of the cases were charged to court and still on trial, while 14 suspects were arrested and one case under investigation.
Abang made the disclosure when he played host the National Human Rights Commission Anambra State Chapter led by the Coordinator, Nkechi Flaura Ugwuanyi who were in his office as part of their activities to mark a one week Campaign against Rape in the State.
He assured them of his maximum support towards realising their goal of making the state Rape-free.
“Between January 2020 to date the Command has recorded 13 cases of Rape out of which 12 cases were charged to Court and still on trial,14 suspects arrested and one case under investigation.
“The Command under my watch will continue to partner with the Human Rights Commission and other Stakeholders in order to enhance safety and Security in the State,” he stated.
Earlier, State Coordinator, National Human Rights Commission Anambra State chapter, Nkechi Ugwuanyi appealed to the CP to ensure discreet investigation of all rape cases in order to serve as deterrence to potential offenders in the State.
She said the peaceful rally earlier carried out by the organization with a banner tagged “Activism and campaign against Rape”, was to raise awareness against rape and make Anambra State a Rape-Free State.
In another development, the Commissioner of Police also met with hoteliers and discussed issues bordering on Security in the State.
He urged them to as a matter of urgency install CCTV Cameras in all hotel premises and also do background checks on their staff as proactive measure to enhance safety and security at their respective hotels.
UNICEF reported in 2015 that one in four girls and one in ten boys in Nigeria had experienced sexual violence before the age of 18.
According to a survey by Positive Action for Treatment Access, over 31.4 percent of girls there said that their first sexual encounter had been rape or forced sex of some kind.
