Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has said Paul Pogba should have taken Declan Rice’s shot “in the mush”, rather than throwing up his hands against West Ham.

Former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville blasted midfielder, Paul Pogba for handing West Ham United a penalty during the Red Devils’ Premier League 1-1 draw against the visitors on Wednesday night at Old Trafford.

Pogba was punished for handball in the area and a penalty was awarded to the Hammers. Michail Antonio stepped up to give his side the lead with the last kick of the first half.

United levelled in the second half through Mason Greenwood and now need a point against Leicester City on Sunday, to qualify for the Champions League.

Speaking after the game, when Solskjaer was asked about the Pogba incident, he said: “It’s a natural reaction. Paul held hands up knowing he should have taken it in the mush. It came flying at him at 100 miles an hour.”

Neville, who was not happy with Pogba’s display, labelled the France World Cup winner as ‘rubbish and embarrassing’, adding that the 27-year-old should have taken Declan Rice’s shot “in the grid”, rather than throwing up his hands against West Ham.

“He’s in trouble, Paul Pogba, he’s in big, big trouble,” Neville said on Sky Sports as replays confirmed the handball.

“He’s given a penalty away, he’s put his arms up and pretends it’s hit his head. Rubbish, Rubbish from him. To think, I felt a little bit sorry for him, I thought he took a whack in the head. Embarrassing. You don’t do that. You take it in the grid. It’s Rubbish from him, Rubbish!”

Anaedoonline.com reported that Manchester United expect to confirm a contract extension for Paul Pogba at the end of the season, the UK Metro reports.

Pogba is believed to be close to agreeing terms on a new five-year deal with the Red Devils.

The France midfielder has one year left on the five-year deal he signed in 2016, when he returned to Old Trafford from Juventus, although United have a 12-month extension clause which they would have triggered.

Pogba has requested to leave United on two separate occasions since he rejoined and looked destined to quit in 2018 after falling out with Jose Mourinho.

The Red Devils have not secured a top-four finish since 2018.
