Teachers in the southeast region of Nigeria have been mandated to undergo COVID-19 tests. This according to David
Governor David Umahi
, chairman of the southeast governors’ forum and Ebonyi state governor, was a joint resolution of all the state governors in the region.
The governor also revealed that the forum is reviewing the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic in the region.
He added that school infrastructures will be reviewed to support the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) protocols.
Going further, he said eastern states will commence COVID-19 testing on every household, targeting people of 65 years and above.
Legit.ng had reported that the Lagos state government would reopen schools in the state on August 3 for senior secondary school three (SS3) students who are preparing for the 2020 West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).
The decision was taken following a meeting between the Lagos Ministry of Education and leaders of various private school owners at the Alausa secretariat in Ikeja on Thursday, July 23.
The state government would on Monday, July 27, release the guidelines for reopening schools strictly for lesson classes for the SS3 students ahead of their exams.
However, all other students at secondary and primary schools, as well as tertiary levels in the state, would still stay at home until further notice.
Sources told the newspaper that the yet to be released guideline requires schools to enforce COVID-19 safety measures such as registration with government-approved hospitals in case of an eventuality, infrared thermometers, and readiness to comply with other safety guidelines and protocols.
Speaking on the issue, Emmanuel Olaniran, the head of public affairs of the office of quality assurance, said the guidelines for reopening would be made public on Monday, July 27.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had also reported that as coronavirus cases continue to rise the South Africa government has ordered the shut down of public schools.
The government had reopened many schools in the country to allow students in their final years at primary and secondary school to return to learning.
According to President Cyril Ramaphosa, the “cabinet has decided that all public schools should take a break for the next four weeks”.
