After 30 Years, Nnewi Market Gets Modern Toilet Facility

The Lawmaker representing Nnewi North in Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor has built a Modern Public Convenience for Eke Amaugwu Market in Umudim, Nnewi.

The market which has been in existence for over 30 years and is the major market in Umudim, Nnewi has been without a toilet facility.

Commissioning the facility, today, Thursday, 30th July 2020, the Traditional Ruler of Umudim Nnewi Community, His Highness, Obi Benneth Okafor (Amaukwu), commended the young lawmaker for seeing the need to build the toilet facility.

According to him, the lack of public convenience in the market has been a source of concern to him over the years, noting that traders in the market will now be at ease doing their businesses.

He praised Hon. Nonso Okafor for his performance so far in the Anambra State House Assembly which he described as outstanding, advising him not to relent in his efforts to make Nnewi better.

Speaking during the brief opening of the facility, Hon. Nonso Smart said that he was moved to build the toilet after he discovered that the market of such standard had no public convenience.

He revealed that when he was still in primary school, the market had no toilet facility, as he used to follow his grandmother, Late Mrs. Elizabeth Nnabuike to the market to make sells, he was shocked when he visited the market last year to discover that the market had no public convenience.

To curb open defection and other unhealthy acts in and around the market, he noted that he built the toilet/sanitary facility for the market, for the use of both the traders and customers.

The facility has four (4) units of modern toilets with wash-hand basins, One thousand (1000) litters of tank for water storage, hand soap, tissue paper, and cleaning supplies.

Hon. Nonso Okafor also used the opportunity to thank Architect Tony Okonkwo for providing the land where the toilet was built and also promising to connect the toilet to his borehole to ensure constant water supply to the facility.

He urged the leadership of the market to maintain the facility and treat it like their own personal property. He however assured traders of the market of his commitment towards ensuring that their welfare remains his top priority.

Appreciating the Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor, the Leader of the Market, Mrs. Celina Okonkwo (Mama Nnamdi) commended Hon. Smart for the gesture, she said that traders in the market have suffered in the past due to lack of the facility.

According to her, the toilet will stop open defecation in and around the market, promising that the facility will always be maintained.

Expressing their Joy, some of the traders of the market who spoke were full of appreciation to Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor.

For Mrs. Joy Udegbunam, the toilet facility will go along way to ensure that the market is clean, as unhealthy acts like urinating in and around the market will end.

Commending the young lawmaker, Mrs. Obi Ifeoma who is also a trader in the market said that the toilet facility is plus towards improving the standard of the market.

Another Trader who was seen dancing with other women in the market. She narrated that the women are so happy because now they will no longer have to spend money to go home to defecate or go to the bushes anymore. They thanked the Hon. for remembering them even after many years.

The brief ceremony had the presence of the Chairman of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Nnewi North Local Government, Hon. Chike Agwuncha, Secretary Nnewi North Local Government, Hon. Anazodo Echezona, the State representative of All Progressive Grand Alliance, Hon. Sylvia and other personalities.

It will be recalled that about a month ago, Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor built a beautiful 3-Bedroom Bungalow built for three (3) childless widows in Nnewi.
