Lionel Messi’s future at the Camp Nou remains the topic of discussion as it is still unclear if the 33-year-old will play for Barcelona when the new season starts as he has threatened to leave.

The Argentine is visibly furious with the Barcelona management and latest reports have it that the Argentine has threatened to quit the Catalan club in 2021.

It was gathered that Messi, whose contract lapses in the summer of 2021, has told the club board to restructure the squad totally otherwise he would leave.

He has also told new club manager Ronald Koeman he does not see his future at the club anymore, however here are reasons the multiple Ballon d’Or winner is upset with Barcelona according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, cited in The Sun.

1. Inability to re-sign Neymar Despite scoring 68 league goals for the Catalan club, Neymar who had a formidable partnership with Messi was allowed to join French club PSG Paris Saint for a record £190million deal in 2017. Since then, Barcelona have been doing everything to re-sign the Brazilian but failed. The club went on to splash cash on French international Antoine Griezmann who has not been so impressive since his arrival at the club.

2. Sacking of Valverde The former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde was fired in January following a string of poor results and Messi who had good relationship with the former boss was convinced that the tactician would be able to turn the club’s fortunes around. Valverde’s dismissal led to sporting director Eric Abidal’s criticism of the effort of the players.

3. Abidal’s criticism The ousted sporting director at the club Eric Abidal claimed that some Valverde’s failure was due to the fact that some players were not happy playing under the gaffer. Messi took to social media to slam the boss saying: “The people in the sporting directorate should also assume their responsibility and above all take ownership of the decisions they make.”

4. Inability to connect with Setien All through the reign of Quique Setien at the club, Messi couldn’t connect the same way he did with Valverde. It is believed that he was not happy with the way the manager ran the club before he left.

5. Pay cut Messi and team-mates had their wages slashed up to 70% due to the pandemic and Messi was upset how the club allowed the situation to escalate to the point that it will affect players.

Meanwhile, Anaedoonline.ng earlier reported that Lionel Messi had a confidential chat with Barcelona new boss Ronald Koeman hours after the tactician was announced the manager, but details of the discussion were made public.
