Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has aimed a dig at Manchester City over their attempts to sign Lionel Messi when the Argentine wanted out at Barcelona.

The Citizens and a few other clubs including Man United, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Paris Saint Germain all showed their interest in the 33-year-old.

Though, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner has decided to see out his contract at Camp Nou before considering a move away from the club.

The Portuguese-born tactician insisted that the North London club could not have afforded the Barca captain due to their respect for the ‘Financial Fair Play’ rule.

City recently escaped punishment from UEFA after being slapped with a two-season ban for breaching the FFP regulations.

“In the case, it’s a disgraceful decision because if City are not guilty of it then you are not punished with £10m,” said the Portuguese. “If you’re not guilty you shouldn’t have a fine.

If they are guilty the decision is also a disgrace and you should be banned from the competition.”

The 57-year-old during a promotional video for Top Eleven said Tottenham would not be willing to break any rules to try and sign Messi onto their books.

Asked if he would like to sign the Barca superstar, the 57-year-old told JOE: “For my Top Eleven team? No, not for Tottenham. Just for Top Eleven.

“We respect Financial Fair Play at Tottenham. “He can only go to a team that doesn’t respect Financial Fair Play, so it’s not Tottenham, for sure.
