In solidarity with the ongoing call for the end of police brutality, the Lawmaker representing Nnewi North South Constituency in Anambra State, Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor, has called on the President of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, to begin holistic reforms of Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
The Lawmaker who made the call on the floor of Anambra State House of Assembly, yesterday, Thursday, 15th October, 2020, on the resumption of plenary after two (2) months recess called on the President to immediately expedite action on the calls for reforms of the Nigeria police force across the nation.

Stating as a Matter of Urgent Public Importance, Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor, through a motion titled, “Motion calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to cause a total and thorough reform of the Nigeria Police” admitted that most officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) instead of showing professionalism in the discharge of their duty, have adopted highhandedness, impunity, harassment and intimidation as a method of service, hence, reducing the credibility of the force.
According to him, the agitation of Nigerians especially the youths, is not against police carrying out their constitutional responsibility, but a condemnation on the way and manner most of the officers kill, brutalize, intimidate, make arbitrary arrest and unsubstantiated allegations against innocent Nigerians.
Calling for immediate holistic reforms in the Nigeria Police Force, the Lawmaker who also represents the youth constituency, said that the President must show genuine concern by addressing the protesters and also to begin an immediate reformation of the police force.
According to him, there should be a serious review on the process of recruitment, training, welfare and operation of police officers in other to ensure the repositioning of the Nigeria Police to a modern and professional security agency.

He noted that since insecurity has remained one of the biggest challenges facing Nigeria, the reform of Nigeria Police is inevitable.
While commending the youths for their resilience in the quest to put an end to police brutality, Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor, urged the President that the reforms shouldn’t end just on written paper, but in the operation of the police officers.
