EndSARS: EEDC Recounts Losses After Vandalism

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) is currently counting its losses after #EndSARS vandals launched gruesome attacks on its facilities across the southeast region.

Head corporate communications of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, Mr.Emeka Ezeh who spoke with newsmen on the level of devastations, said vehicles belonging to the company were set ablaze as well as some outstations were demolished beyond recognition.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) is currently counting its losses after #EndSARS vandals launched gruesome attacks on its facilities across the southeast region.

Ezeh who explained that communication has been sent out to network managers in their various locations to send details of destructions on EEDC installations, said there was a clear case of vandalism at Umudim Nnewi where the service centre was razed down completely.

He said another issue was stray bullets that pierced the power transformer at Ogbor hills Aba, Abia state where the transformer oil was tampered with and it drastically affected their operations in the area.

Ezeh also disclosed that the organization lost one of its operational vehicles loaded with metres in Enugu. He said the vehicle was set ablaze by the irate youths at Onuasata and the driver narrowly escaped death.

He said EEDC operations were hampered by the unrest and that customers who had issues with supply were not attended to because of the unsafe environment occasioned by the ENDSARS protests.

According to him, prior to the ENDSARS mayhem, contracts were awarded for network expansion projects identified within the five southeast states and that the contractors have been commissioned, adding that about 1.6 billion naira has been earmarked for the projects.

He said that ongoing projects in Anambra state include dualisation of Agulu 33KVA Feeder for power evacuation from Nibo TCN, commissioning of Oba Injection Substation and Debating of 47number DSS from 33 to 11, upgrade of Ugwunwasike 1/15 MVA 33KVA Injection Centre to 1/15 and 1/7.5, feeder by focation of Nnewi industrial as well as Creation of Nkwelle 2 11KVA feeder and capacity enhancement of 33/11KV power transformer at 33 Injection Substation.

That the projects mentioned have been commissioned while some others are still awaiting commissioning and that the contract sum for Anambra state is about N500 million.

Ezeh however pointed out that the ENDSARS mayhem on its facilities will not affect plans already in place to improve electricity supply in the southeast but solicited support from customers as they strive to enhance quality of their services.

He said the organization was not happy that some people undermined the efforts of the business through vandalisation of its installations but urged customers to be vigilant and security conscious to identify vandals who perpetrated evil acts on their outfits.
