Aside from his brace from the penalty spot, Timo Werner was fairly quiet against Rennes.

Chelsea came into the game on the back of a nine-game unbeaten run and were looking to make it 10 early enough when new boy Hakim Ziyech brilliantly controlled the ball in the eight minute but flicked his shot over the bar.

A minute later and the Blues had the chance to pick the lead when Werner had his ankle clipped inside the box. Notably, Jorginho, who also made the starting 11, did not take the spot kick and Werner converted his fifth goals in his last six games for Chelsea.

For all their dominance, Chelsea got yet another penalty in the 38th minute after Rennes full back Dalbert Henrique Chagas Estevão was adjudged to have handled the ball from a Tammy Abraham shot after a long check by the Video Assisted Referee.

Werner rifled the resulting spot-kick into the roof of the net for his second of the day to put his side firmly in control of the game.

It went from bad to worse for the visitors as they were reduced to 10 men after Dalbert was shown a second yellow card.

Chelsea began the second half as they did the first and six minutes after the restart, Tammy Abraham stuck out a boot to tap in a brilliant cross from Reece James.

Rennes thought the found a consolation goal late on after Jéremy Doku found the back of the net in the 82nd minute after a brilliant save from Edouard Mendy but it was ruled out for offside.

In the end, Chelsea proved too strong for their opponents, whom they meet again in three weeks’ time in the reverse fixture. In the other Group E game, Sevilla came from two goals down to pick a dramatic 3-2 win over their Russian opponents Krasnodar in a thoroughly entertaining game at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.

The win sees Sevilla go level on points with Chelsea with both sides acquiring seven from their first three Champions League games.
