PRESS RELEASE

Withdraw your soldiers from our peaceful Orlu

We have observed with disappointment the conspiracy of silence among our political, traditional and elite groups on the continued inversion of Orlu by officers of the Nigerian Army which has led to the breach of peace and economic stagnation in our hitherto peaceful zone;

Videos of tragic and barbaric attacks and raids on homes of innocent citizens allegedly by officers of the Nigerian Army are also trending on all social media platforms, while images of women and children gruesomely murdered in broad day light had already suffocated the space.

While we are totally against any form of violence, insurrection or banditry in any part of the society, we are however against the unnecessary and cowardice clamp down on innocent and harmless Orlu citizens.

Orlu is a peaceful zone, no doubt. Orlu Youths have not been known for banditry, militancy or any form of rebellious acts against constituted authorities.

Orlu people have been known to have maintained cordial relationships with their tenants who have lived, worked and sold their wares in our land. Orlu people remain the best anywhere among Nigerians. We do not see reasons therefore, why punishments for offences committed by others should be visited upon our people.

As a group of young and emerging Leaders of Orlu zone, this organisation hereby appeals to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Imo State, Distinguished Sen. Hope Uzodinma to cause the immediate withdrawal of soldiers from Orlu roads, stop soldiers from breaking into our homes and beating up our youths, husbands and men as well as allow the return of lives and businesses in our peaceful town of Orlu and environs.

We are also appealing to men of the Nigerian Police to be circumspect in their handling of our youths. Recent images of their turtures on innocent youths around the popular Banana Junction do not in anyway portray them as our “friends”.

Our Organization will be available to assist governments and security agencies in whatever way needed to ensure that peace returned back to our beautiful and loving city.

At the moment, we are of the view that soldiers should leave our streets, roads and homes and beam their searchlights on the bushes where we have been told are the hideout for the real perpetrators.

The clamp down on innocent citizens of Orlu while the alleged perpetrators had left the area may be interpreted as cowardice and helplessness which are not anywhere features of the gallant Nigerian Army we have come to know in the past.
