“In 2014, I signed into law the Anambra State Vigilante bill to strengthen security at the grassroots. One of the contents of the law says that once every month, a joint security meeting between the Igwe, PG, youth leaders and Divisional Police Officers in charge of that community be held to understand the security situation at every point. I urge you today to go back to your communities and begin to reconvene these meetings because security is every man’s business”.

” The issues of drugs and cultism among our youths are becoming alarming. The government is particularly not happy about that, the ASATU youth wing, Ohaneze youth wing with Ndi Igwe and PGs should fish out the perpetrators of such acts. No crime happens without the knowledge of your people.”

On ways of encouraging the Vigilante officers, Governor Obiano advocated the introduction of “ASHIA adoption model” whereby wellmeaning Ndi Anambra can support security activities at the grassroots.

” Due to the economic challenges, the state can only pay 20 Persons per community. Ndi igwe should rally the rich men in their communities to adopt some of these Vigilante officers and pay them little stipends as a way of encouraging them and supporting the state government effort. We will continue to do our best in strengthening the Vigilante services because, that sector is a very important”.

Governor Obiano concluded by thanking all the security agencies that helped to keep Anambra as the safest state in Nigeria and promised never to relent in improving from what we have presently.

Speaking, Police DIG, Joseph Egbunike who represented the IG of police, Mr Muhammed Adamu said that the Vigilante security architecture in Anambra is a model that other states are emulating.

“The Governor of Anambra State remains the best security conscious administrator in Nigeria. He has invested heavily on security, provided(s) vehicles and other logistics to aid the security officers. Please, let all officers live up to their responsibilities. With the coorporation of the government and the people, we will win the war against crime.”

Earlier in his opening remarks, Mr Greg Obi, the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters stated that the meeting became necessary to address the security issues in various communities and charge everyone to collaborate with the security agencies to curb crimes and criminality.
