Imo Lawyers, Judiciary Workers Suspend Sitting As The Protest Kidnap Of Their Member

Lawyers and judiciary workers in Imo State, yesterday, protested against the abduction of a lawyer in the state, Chima Awurum, demanding that the needful be done to free him from captivity.

Anaedoonline.ng gathered that  was kidnapped last weekend at Mbano–Etiti axis. They also demanded the arrest of the abductors.

Secretary of the Owerri branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chinedu Agu, stated yesterday that their request to suspend sitting was approved by the Acting Chief Judge of the state, Ijeoma Aguguo, while the approval memo was signed by the Chief Registrar, Chinyere Okereke, noting that they complied based on that.

The statement read in part: “The Office of the Chief Registrar, High Court of Imo State, has declared that, in solidarity with the Mbano–Etiti branch of NBA, the high courts and magistrates courts will not sit on Tuesday.”

Meanwhile, Anaedoonline.ng reported that scores of lawyers in Anambra State on Monday boycotted courts in the area. They marched to Government House from the Judiciary Headquarters, Awka (about one and a half kilometers) to protest the spate of killings in the state by gunmen.

They stated that one of their members, Frank Onwuachi, was kidnapped and killed in recent terror attacks on the state.

No fewer than six policemen, four naval officers, two prison guards and others had been killed in the state within a week.

Four police stations and several security formations in the state had also been attacked, patrol vehicles burnt, while arms and ammunition were carted away by hoodlums.

The situation, the state governor, Willie Obiano, said in a state broadcast on Sunday, had made him to call for a reinforcement of security personnel from the Army, Police, and the Directorate of State Services.

Protesting on Monday, the legal practitioners under the aegis of the Committee of Chairmen and Secretaries of the Nigerian Bar Association decried the high rate of insecurity in the area.
