Yesterday, Wednesday the 28th of April 2021, the Federal Road Safety Corps intercepted a human trafficker in Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, Anambra State. The man had, in his vehicular possession, five teenagers who were rescued by the operatives of the Road Safety Corps.

FRSC patrol team led by Route Commander Ugochukwu Ogbonna made the discovery. They didn’t set out to burst this illegal business. They initially stopped the black Nissan Primera vehicle with registration number BEN468HP, for an offence of seat belt violation (SBV) and Obstruction of Marshal on duty (OMD). Then they noticed the five girls in the car and it didn’t seem right.

FRSC operatives began to ask questions of the man who identified himself as Frank Lucky but his answers didn’t dispel suspicions. The booking for seat belt violation became an arrest and impounding for human trafficking.

The State Sector Public Education Officer, Florence Edor, made this information known to the public in a statement.

The girls are said to be from a place called Vande Ikya in Benue State and according to the suspected trafficker were heading to heading to Benin City to help in farm work. The girls contradicted him, disclosing that they were heading to Benin City to serve in Beer Parlours which could be a euphemism for many unprintable things.

One of the girls appeared to be heavily pregnant.

The matter has since been directed to the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, Anambra Headquarters for further investigation.

“The suspect and victims are going to be in our custody pending when we conclude our investigation,” the head of NAPTIP Anambra State told newsmen. “I’m sure there are maybe other chain suspects because this is a syndicate.”

Further arrests are expected. We will continue to monitor this news.
